My 10 Favorite Materials


1. Material: Alloy Steel
Processing: CW and doping
Properties: Common alloyants include manganese (the most common one), nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, silicon, and boron.
Applications: Rolled Homogenous Armor (RHA), turbine blades, electric transformers.

2. Material: Aluminum-Scandium
Processing: Forged, Welded.
Properties: Small grain boundaries in comparison to other Aluminum alloys. 
Applications: Aerospace technology, sporting equipment.

3.  Material: Nickle-Titanium
Processing: Hot Working, Cold Working, and Vapor Deposition.
Properties: Density = 6.45 g/cm3

4. Material: Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
Processing: ABS is derived from acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene.
Properties: The most important properties of ABS are the impact resistance and toughness.

5. Material: Depleted Uranium (DU)
Processing:
The production of enriched uranium using isotope separation creates depleted uranium.
Properties: Very dense, and very toxic.
Applications: Despite its controversial uses, I’m interested in its unique properties that make it effective within military applications.  Ammunition ect.

Processing: Mined, and hydrogen reduction.
Properties: Highest melting point of all elements discovered at 3422 degrees Celcius. 
Applications: ICBMs, electrical conductor (WC)

7. Material: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Processing: suspension polymerization
Properties: Chemical Formula: (C2H3Cl)
Applications: Regular PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a common, strong but lightweight plastic used in construction

Processing: Mined, found from volcanic areas.
Properties: Amorphous
